Try these Healthy Labor Day Recipes
Labor Day is in two weeks and that means everyone will be firing up their grills and partaking in the All-American BBQ! Instead of filling yourself with hot dogs, cheeseburgers, and sweets, try these healthy, yet yummy BBQ recipe options!
Grilled Chicken Sausage with Roasted Peppers: Instead of throwing hot dogs and buns on the grill, try an antibiotic-free chicken sausage. There are a few brands on the market these days, so check your local supermarket. To spice it up, slice up red, green, and orange bell peppers. Sprinkle the peppers with a dash of salt and pepper, throw it in a grill basket and onto the grill. This is a much healthier, lower in fat, and nitrate free option!
Cold Potato Salad with Dill: Instead of having traditional potato salad that is drenched in high-calorie mayonnaise, try this recipe instead. Start with small red potatoes, and bring them to a boil in a large pot. Once tender, drain and cool. After the potatoes have cooled, quarter and place them in a large bowl. Next, dress the potatoes with garlic-infused olive oil, fresh dill and chopped celery. Mix together and refrigerate for a few hours before serving. This recipe is light and refreshing!
Roasted Corn on the Cob: Roasting corn is one of the easiest things to make on Labor Day. To add a little kick to your corn, gently pull back the husk, keeping it attached. Remove the corn silk and sprinkle the corn with paprika, cumin, garlic powder and olive oil. Pull the husk back up, and place the corn directly on the grill, gently turning it for 3-5 minutes. Place a skewer stick in the bottom and serve!
Watermelon Spritzer: Try this tasty drink instead of beer or wine to help with hydration while you are grilling. Cut up and remove the seeds of half a watermelon. Place the cut up watermelon in a blender with ice, mint, and raspberry seltzer water. Blend on medium until the watermelon is pureed. Pour into a glass and garnish with a fresh mint leaf! For extra tang, you can add a bit of vodka or tequila – they both have lower calories than beer and wine.
